Manchester Fashion Institute INTERFACES Showcase Photography
Photographing the Manchester Fashion Institute Graduate Showcase
I photographed the Manchester Fashion Institute INTERFACES showcase at Manchester Metropolitan University on 19 May, documenting the runway presentations, exhibition spaces, and the atmosphere throughout the evening. The event brought together graduate fashion collections, digital work, and live presentations across Holden Gallery and the surrounding university spaces.
Runway Photography Inside Holden Gallery
The lighting inside Holden Gallery changed constantly during the catwalk presentations, creating sharp contrasts between the runway and audience areas. Photographing the show became more about timing and observation than controlled setup, especially during faster sequences and transitions between collections.
Graduate Fashion Collections at MMU
The showcase featured a wide range of graduate work across fashion design and creative disciplines. Many of the collections focused on shape, material, and presentation, with the gallery setting giving the work a more exhibition-based atmosphere than a traditional runway alone.
Audience and Atmosphere During the Showcase
Between presentations, the space shifted into something closer to an exhibition opening, with students, tutors, photographers, and guests moving through the installations and displays. Some of the strongest images came from quieter moments away from the runway itself.
Fashion Photography at Manchester Metropolitan University
Photographing creative events inside university environments often feels different from commercial fashion work. There is usually a more experimental atmosphere, with the process and presentation becoming part of the event itself.
Editorial Approach to Fashion Event Photography
Throughout the evening I worked in a documentary style, focusing on natural movement and interaction rather than heavily staged images. That approach suited the pace of the showcase and the layout of the gallery spaces.
Materials, Styling, and Presentation
Several collections used layered materials, sculptural silhouettes, and reflective surfaces that responded strongly to the gallery lighting. Close detail shots worked well alongside the wider runway photographs and audience scenes.
Documentary Photography Across the Event
Rather than focusing only on the catwalk, I photographed the wider environment throughout the evening, including conversations, installations, preparation, and movement between spaces. That helped create a fuller record of the showcase as an event rather than only a runway presentation.
Manchester Fashion Photography and Creative Culture
Graduate showcases like INTERFACES are part of Manchester’s wider creative and cultural scene, bringing together fashion, design, and live presentation in a public setting. The event reflected the city’s growing connection to contemporary fashion and creative education.
Photographing Live Catwalk Presentations
Runway photography always involves working quickly within changing conditions. During the showcase, the pace of the presentations created a balance between structured catwalk images and more spontaneous documentary moments around the venue.
Exhibition Spaces and Installation Work
Alongside the runway presentations, the exhibition spaces included digital displays, printed work, and installation-based projects. Photographing the wider environment helped place the collections within the broader context of the showcase.
Manchester Editorial Event Photographer
The INTERFACES showcase was an opportunity to document fashion, presentation, and audience interaction within one of Manchester’s major creative university spaces. I photograph fashion events, exhibitions, graduate showcases, and editorial projects across Manchester and the North West for universities, galleries, brands, and cultural organisations.
