Editorial & Commercial Portrait Photography

David Oates is a Manchester-based portrait photographer working across editorial, commercial and institutional commissions throughout the UK and internationally. His work focuses on natural, observational portrait photography made for publications, organisations and brands.

Assignments include editorial portrait photography for newspapers and magazines, as well as commercial portrait photography for universities, cultural institutions and corporate clients. Each commission is shaped by context, brief and location, rather than a fixed visual style.

The approach is calm and collaborative, allowing subjects to feel at ease while ensuring the final portraits are clear, purposeful and suitable for publication. Portraits are often made on location, responding to real environments such as workplaces, studios, institutions and public spaces.

His portrait photography is used across editorial features, communications campaigns, reports and digital platforms.

Editorial Portrait Photography

Editorial portrait commissions are produced for newspapers, magazines and publications, often working closely with writers, editors and art directors.

The focus is on creating portraits that support narrative and context, whether documenting writers, artists, public figures or professionals. These assignments often require working quickly and unobtrusively in real environments, responding to editorial deadlines and real-world conditions.

The resulting portraits are natural, direct and context-driven, designed to sit within wider editorial storytelling rather than function as standalone studio images.

Commercial Portrait Photography

Commercial portrait photography is produced for organisations including universities, cultural institutions and corporate clients across the UK.

These commissions often involve photographing academics, staff, leadership teams and professionals for use across marketing, recruitment, reports and digital communications. The emphasis is on clarity, professionalism and approachability while still maintaining a natural, documentary feel.

Portraits are typically made on location within workplaces or institutional environments, ensuring the imagery reflects both the individual and the organisation they represent.

Portrait Photography Across Manchester, the UK and Internationally

Portrait photography commissions are undertaken throughout Manchester, across the UK and internationally for editorial and commercial clients.

Work spans publication portraiture, institutional photography and corporate communications, with all commissions approached in a natural and collaborative way.

Alongside portrait photography, I regularly work on event photography commissions for cultural and institutional clients, as well as broader commercial photography projects across technology, education and organisational environments.
