Commercial Photographer Manchester – Technology, Corporate & Industrial Photography

David Oates is a Manchester-based commercial photographer working across technology, corporate and industrial sectors throughout the UK and internationally. His work focuses on documentary-led commercial photography for organisations operating in technical, fast-moving and commercially driven environments.

With a background in science and engineering, he brings a practical understanding of how technical systems, production processes and industrial environments operate. This informs a grounded, observational approach to photographing complex workplaces, whether in technology companies, digital production studios, manufacturing environments or large-scale infrastructure projects.

A significant part of the practice is now focused on technology companies, digital services and corporate organisations within Manchester’s growing tech and innovation sector, alongside ongoing work in industrial and engineering environments.

Cubic Motion – Technology and Digital Production

This commission involved commercial photography within a high-end motion capture and facial animation studio working at the forefront of the global video games industry.

The work included product photography, staff portraits and documentation of a highly technical yet collaborative working environment. The focus was on capturing both the precision of advanced imaging systems and the human processes behind them, showing how technology and creativity operate together in real production settings.

Working within an active studio environment required an observational approach, documenting workflows, equipment and interaction as they naturally occurred. The resulting imagery reflects both the technical complexity of the systems and the culture of the team using them.

The photography is used across marketing, communications and digital platforms, supporting a global technology business operating at scale within the creative and gaming sectors.

Transport for the North – Infrastructure and Regional Systems

This project involved commercial photography documenting transport infrastructure, energy systems and regional industry across the north of England.

The work was shot across multiple locations, from river transport corridors to offshore wind energy installations, capturing the scale and complexity of regional connectivity and infrastructure investment.

The approach was documentary, focusing on operational environments and real-world systems rather than staged compositions. Attention was given to movement, scale and the relationship between people, industry and infrastructure.

The resulting imagery is used across communications, reporting and stakeholder engagement, supporting visual storytelling around transport development, energy transition and regional growth.

BP – Offshore Wind & Hydrogen Projects

A series of photographs commissioned to document large-scale renewable energy and infrastructure projects in the North of England, including offshore wind development in the North Sea and Irish Sea, and hydrogen energy production on Teesside.

The work included time spent on board a marine survey vessel operating offshore, documenting the early-stage assessment of seabed conditions for future wind turbine installation, alongside public consultation activity connected to the wind farm development. Further photography was produced on land, capturing the transformation of a former industrial steelworks site into a major new energy project focused on hydrogen production.

The resulting imagery reflects the scale, complexity and evolving landscape of energy infrastructure, combining industrial, environmental and human elements within a documentary framework. Photographs are used across communications, reports and public-facing platforms to illustrate the transition towards renewable energy and long-term infrastructure investment.

Copenhagen Industrial Partners – Energy Infrastructure Construction

This commission documented the early construction phase of a major energy-from-waste facility in the North West of England, forming part of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure development.

The project captures the construction of a long-term energy system designed to process waste and generate electricity at industrial scale. The work focused on machinery, structural development and evolving site conditions during the early stages of build.

The approach is observational and documentary, working within active construction environments to record real progress and operational complexity. The imagery reflects both the scale of infrastructure and the technical nature of the build process.

The resulting photography is used for communications, reporting and stakeholder documentation relating to major energy infrastructure investment.

Nufox – Industrial Manufacturing Photography

Nufox is a specialist rubber manufacturing company based in Manchester producing highly technical and diverse industrial products across aerospace, transport, engineering and specialist manufacturing sectors.

The commission involved documenting manufacturing processes, industrial machinery, bespoke production and working environments across the site. The work captured both large-scale production systems and highly detailed engineering outputs, from complex components to finished specialised products.

The approach is documentary and observational, focusing on real working conditions, technical processes and the people behind production. With a background in science and engineering, the work is informed by an understanding of how these systems operate in practice.

The resulting commercial photography supports website content, marketing and ongoing communications, providing a clear visual representation of a highly specialised manufacturing business.

Commercial Photography Across Manchester, the UK and Internationally

Commercial photography commissions are undertaken throughout Manchester, across the UK and internationally, covering technology, corporate, industrial and infrastructure environments.

All work is approached with a documentary sensibility informed by a background in science and engineering, focusing on real people, processes and working systems to produce clear, purposeful commercial imagery.

Alongside commercial photography commissions, I also produce event photography for cultural and institutional clients, as well as portrait photography for editorial and organisational use. These areas of practice often overlap, depending on the brief and context of the commission.
